As you may be aware, Maestro is shy and will not tell us how he came to know you. I would like to ask you about it.
I became aware of him when he entered the Conservatory. Since I kept friends rather with pianists than with singers, I had a lot of information about him. I also went to his concerts. He was quite an attractive young man with red hair. His performance was very amazing.

Were you already acquainted with Richter?
No, I was not yet acquainted with him. Only I went to the concerts to hear him perform. Some time afterwards the war broke out and I evacuated to Tbilisi. Slava was acquainted with a female friend of mine who was a painter. One day Slava visited Tbilisi to give a public performance and called on me with a present from my friend who had asked him to hand it to me. It was our first encounter and after that we came to meet often.
