Earl Wild (Quote, 1997)

In memory

E a r l   W i l d
(26 Nov.1915 - 23 Jan. 2010)

Pianist

Earl Wild, Richter's contemporary (they were both born in 1915), spoke with us about Richter's legacy.

"I first heard Sviatoslav Richter at Carnegie Hall on October 23, 1960, where he played an all Prokofiev program. It was simply stunning. He played with great conviction — with poetry and sensitivity, limitless technique enhanced by a feeling for bravura, and an understanding of Prokofiev's temperament. It was one of the rare times that I heard the Sonatas [he played the sixth and eighth at that recital] presented with total authority. Being his first tour of the States, he mentioned to a friend of mine, 'At my age, the strain of making my debut in the United States is almost unbearable.' I consider it a great privilege to have heard him in live performances, and I'm very grateful for the enduring legacy he gave the music world with his many recordings. He was an original!"
