"Andreas, you and Slava are like a pair of Siamese twins!"

"Andreas, you and Slava are like a pair of Siamese twins!"

Andreas Lucewicz, concert pianist

Excerpt

... When I turned pages for him, I tried to sneak a glance at his playing to see precisely what it was that distinguished a Richter interpretation. He did absolutely nothing unusual, and yet there was something there that touched and moved people- and I believe people will never forget him. I recall that you helped Richter play some large chords. He did not like the arpeggio in the last of the Brahms Variations, Op, 21, # 1 and asked me to play the low notes because he could no longer reach them. He could have used the third pedal but he hated it. Occasionally he stepped on the third pedal by mistake and produced the wrong sound, which always made him furious, so he asked the piano tuner to place a brick under it. I turned pages for him in Rachmaninoff, and sometimes there are such chords! Rather than use the third pedal, he begged me to hold the notes, an octave, down at the bottom, while he played the rest at the top. I turned pages for him in the Bach French Suites, which he played at Rolandseck, and I was also there as a sort of unknown performer. There are so many recordings where I turned pages for him and on some I am there, unnoticed but immortalized, holding a note for him. ...
On stage, in concert, naturally! At that point he no longer made studio recordings and only allowed live concerts to be taped. ...
It was very discreet. Whether I helped with those chords or performed as Richter's duo partner, our playing was always together. There was no rattling, no drifting apartI'll never forget that in amazement his wife once remarked, "Andreas, you and Slava are like a pair of Siamese twins!

From an interview in 'Clavier' 2003.
