Yatsugatake Kogen Music Festival
1988
... September 21 to 25 of 1988, assumed a new name, Yatsugatake Kogen Music Festival '88, and Sviatoslav Richter, a famous russian-born pianist, served as music director. Richter especially likes the Yatsugatake Kogen seen from a window through snow-covered trees, and has offered various suggestions in designing the new hall. The hall was designed on the basis of Richter's idea that all is behind trees and barely seen from outside but that there is a music hall. He proposed that it be a small wooden-structure. A new musical piece, entitled "Yatsugatake Kogen Music Festival '88" supervised by Richter himself, was performed at the opening ceremony...

- "I had more opportunities to be in some contact with Richter. Of course, Iwent to listen to many of his concerts in Moscow. The first time we met was actually in Japan. At the time, he had his own music festival. He had planned to play over three consecutive evenings. The first evening was devoted to 18th1]century music, the second was to the 19th 2], and the third to the 20th. He played the first two concerts and suddenly, did not want to play the last one. So there was a panic, and the agency asked if there was someone who could replace him. They offered him a list of replacement pianists - with the condition that the chosen pianist would have to play 20th century music. Luckily that season, I had played many works by Prokofiev, Scriabin, and Debussy. So Richter looked at the list of pianists that the agency had given him, and he chose me as his replacement. [..]

Meanwhile at Yatsugatake Kogen (Heights) Lodge they longed for Richter's concert. After I went to Yatsugatake to see the lobby, I thought Richter would agree to give a concert there. Everything went as we wished and in 1984 at the hall of the lodge deep in the heavy snow Richter's candle-concert was held. At Yatsugatake they tried their best to prepare for the concert. When Richter went there again with Nina in 1986 Nina also came to like the magnificent views of the mountains. Now Yatsugatake is planning to hold concerts produced by Richter and a small hall for Richter will soon be built. The hall will be a Japanese wooden hall in harmony with the environment. I hope Japanese audience will be fascinated by Richter's music in the pretty small hall where they really feel refreshed.
