based on the method that has produced all the greatest pianists of the past, the use of the forearm to produce the necessary power, the back of the hand kept as steady as is possible, all the flexibility being in the wrists and the fingers. By his complete mastery of this method he has absolute control over tonal gradation and never hits the piano to produce a forte or is uncertain in his piano. Combined with this superb technique he has an apparently spontaneous and natural musicianship, which never sounds forced or overcultivated. Bach's second French Suite in C minor showed at once the perfection of Richter's control of sound, the absolute precision of his technique and his fine sense of style. Beethoven's Eroica Variations, Op. 35, were played with such authority and insight that the interpretation was a revelation of their depth and intensity. A Russian pianist with the gifts of Richter could hardly fail to give an ideal performance of Mussorgsky's Pictures from an Exhibition; for with him the the unpianistic writing seemed hardly notice able and every note was set in its proper place. The audience was, very rightly, wildly enthusiastic.
