World famous Soviet pianist, Sviatoslav Richter chose the 25-year-old Hungarian pianist Zoltán Kocsis as his partner in performing piano works for four hands by Franz Schubert at two prestigious international festivals held in the Summer of 1977: The "Schubertiade " staged by world-renowned West German baritone Hermann Prey at Hohenems, Austria, and at the 14th "Fetes Musicales en Touraine" which had been founded by Richter himself.
"Hardly has a concert of recent years moved me as much as the premiere of this, at first sight, artistically curious duo" wrote music critic Peter Cosse, covering both events for the "Salzburger Nachrichten" and several West German journals. "The 62-ear-old Richter, a fanatic of espressivo without compromise, a dominating figure par excellence, partnering the phenomenally gifted, intellectually and technically specific Zoltán Kocsis. . . An interpretation imbued with such insight and presented with such communicative powers humanizes present-day concert life and sweeps away for two hours any reservation toward high-browish trends." Upon his return to Budapest, Mr. Kocsis was asked by this correspondent why Richter had selected him to be his partner at Hohenems and Tours. "lt all started back in 1975 when l was introduced to Richter in Budapest. He had already earlier listened to my gramophone recording of Bartok's Piano Concertos No. 1 and 2, and invited me to attend as his guest the 1975 Tours Festival. lt goes without saying that l felt greatly honoured and gladly accepted, looking forward to listening to a host of excellent musical performances by a galaxy of international artists and also anticipating that l would be able to have some discussions on music with Richter. Thus, l joyfully travelled to Tours, and as the possibility of my performing there didn't enter my mind, l took no tails with me, just a couple of white turtleneck pullovers. But fate willed it otherwise. Maurizio Pollini, who was billed to perform there, was temporarily incapacitated by a regrettable car accident and l was given short notice to step in for him. l couldn't help performing in my white pullover which made a great impact", said Kocsis, with a roguish smile. "So much so, that after my recital Richter offered me to partner him in playing Schubert piano works for four hands at the 1977 Tours Festival. Some time later, Hermann Prey asked Richter that we should put in two guest performances at his "Schubertiade" Festival at Hohenems as well. Thus, we played together at three concerts instead of the originally scheduled one performance."
