(Oleg Prokof'ev) "I would like to finish where I began, his piano playing (Sergej Prokof'ev). It was the last time I
heard him play. It was his birthday, the twenty-third of April, 1947, in the house in Nicholas Mountain. Of musicians, only Miaskovsky and Richter were invited. For Richter, Father prepared a surprise, a sort of present for him and for all the others as well, on his own birthday, still unfinished and later dedicated to Richter. Father valued him immensely as a pianist; I witnessed how he listened to a recording of the Seventh Sonata as recorded by Horowitz and found Richter's superior. "Less mechanical", he said. It was a soft, spring day, the kind that always seems so tenderly calm after a devastatingly endless Russian winter. Father was playing the sonata himself, from the drafts, and therefore frequently stopped, made mistakes, all of it with a certain premeditated disregard for the technical side of performance. Still, the pastoral spirit was felt by all, in harmony with the day's quiet mood. Richter later wrote in his memoirs that "this, in a certain sense, is a sonata domestica". What dominated the piece was a tranquil transcendence, and only sometimes, here and there, the former, tempestuous Prokofiev peeked through a little. On the day of his sixtieth birthday, when the doctors prohibited him from attending the anniversary concert of his works, Richter played the Ninth Sonata for the first time in public. Father listened on the telephone."
