Performing character of the pianist (Zilberquit)

 Performing character of the
pianist Richter

...Richter and the piano are always taken as a single whole, as something absolutely harmonious, indivisible. Whatever Richter is playing, however his performing style changed in the various stages of his evolution, or however differently he performs the music of different authors and styles, one has always been surprised at his absolute integrity with the instrument, the feeling that he was created for the piano, that he is pianistic by birth. It is not just an emotional reaction. There are objective data pointing to Richter's rare innate gift. It is difficult to imagine hands that would be better suited for the piano. Richter easily takes a twelfth (dodicesima) and his extraordinary stretch and elasticity of fingers allows him to take simultaneously the chords G-B Flat-E Flat-G-B Flat and on fortissimo F-A Flat- B-D-A Flat. But he is, above all, primarily a musician and only then a pianist. The piano for him is indeed merely an instrument, a means to penetrate into music in order to recreate it. That quality of his was noted by critics more than once...
